Permanent Pacemaker

An electronic device to stimulate the heart. Such devices are usually required when the heart is beating too slowly - either intermittently or persistently. A slow heart rate may cause breathlessness or may only reduce the amount of exertion a patient can do. Other symptoms associated with a slow heart rate include dizziness, faintness or actual blackout/collapse.

Newer types of pacemaker are used in specialist centres to treat some patients who have heart failure and who are still troubled by symptoms despite appropriate drug treatment.

Cardiac Catheterisation

Cardiac catheterisation is a procedure using X-rays to get detailed pictures (angiograms) of the heart and the arteries feeding the heart muscle.
